Deep Tissue

Target the inner layers of muscle to dissolve chronic tension and “stuck” tissues.

What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic technique that reaches the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue the areas where chronic tension loves to hide.

Unlike a relaxation massage, this treatment uses slow, deliberate strokes and firm, focused pressure to break down adhesions, improve circulation, and restore natural movement to stiff or painful areas.

At Chill Spa in Pacific Beach, we use deep tissue massage to address the underlying causes of discomfort, not just the symptoms.

Whether you’re dealing with a stiff neck from hours at a desk, lower back pain from daily stress, or muscle tightness from an active lifestyle, our therapists tailor every session to your body’s specific needs.

Smart Pressure. Real Results.

Effective deep tissue work isn’t about applying maximum force — it’s about applying the right pressure in the right place.

Our therapists are trained to read the body, identify areas of restriction, and work through layers of tension with purpose and precision.

By targeting the fascia — the connective tissue that surrounds and supports your muscles — we work to release adhesions that cause pain, limit your range of motion, and restrict blood flow.

The result isn’t just relief in the moment. It’s improved mobility, reduced inflammation, and a body that moves the way it’s supposed to.

Why it works

What deep tissue massage can do for you

From stubborn aches to everyday stress, deep tissue massage addresses the root — not just the symptoms. Here's what clients experience after consistent sessions at Chill Spa.

Chronic pain relief

Targets the root cause of persistent muscle pain by breaking down knots and scar tissue deep within the tissue.

Improved mobility

Releases tight fascia and muscle restrictions to restore your natural range of motion and flexibility.

Faster muscle recovery

Boosts circulation and oxygen delivery to fatigued or injured muscles, speeding up the healing process.

Posture correction

Addresses imbalances caused by repetitive movement or prolonged sitting, helping the body realign naturally.

Stress & tension release

Releases deeply held physical and emotional stress stored in the muscles, promoting calm and mental clarity.

Better sleep

Calms the nervous system and reduces cortisol, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Your Deep Tissue Session at Chill Spa

Your session begins with a brief conversation about where you’re holding tension, any areas of pain or sensitivity, and what you’re hoping to get out of the treatment.

This helps your therapist build a plan that’s entirely focused on your body not a one-size-fits-all routine.

During the massage, your therapist will use slow, sustained strokes combined with targeted finger and palm pressure to work through layers of muscle.

You’ll be encouraged to breathe deeply, which helps your body relax into the work. Throughout the session, your feedback guides the pressure we want you to feel the therapeutic benefit without unnecessary discomfort.

After your session, it’s normal to feel a sense of heaviness or mild tenderness for 24 to 48 hours this is your body responding and recovering. Drinking plenty of water helps flush out released toxins and ease any post-session soreness.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before booking your deep tissue massage at Chill Spa in Pacific Beach.

You may feel some therapeutic discomfort — particularly when working through a tight knot — but it should never be unbearable. We always encourage you to speak up so your therapist can adjust the pressure. The goal is lasting relief, not pain.
A regular Swedish massage focuses on surface-level relaxation using lighter, flowing strokes. Deep tissue massage uses slower, more concentrated pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue — making it far more effective for chronic tension, pain, and restricted movement.
Mild soreness for 24 to 48 hours is completely normal — similar to how you feel after a good workout. Drinking plenty of water and resting helps speed up recovery. Most clients feel significant relief within a day or two of their session.
For chronic tension or pain management, many clients benefit from weekly or bi-weekly sessions initially, tapering to once a month for maintenance. Your therapist will recommend a schedule based on your specific needs at your first visit.
Absolutely. We tailor pressure to your comfort level throughout every session. If you're new to massage or particularly sensitive, we recommend starting with our Swedish Massage to let your body adjust before progressing to deeper techniques.
Stay hydrated before your appointment and avoid eating a heavy meal in the hour beforehand. Arrive a few minutes early so you can share any areas of concern with your therapist. Wearing comfortable, loose clothing makes it easier to settle in and unwind after your session.
We recommend consulting your doctor or midwife before booking any massage during pregnancy. In many cases, a gentler prenatal massage is a safer and more comfortable alternative — please speak with our team and we'll help find the right option for you.
